  2. Why running down teenagers GCSE efforts is morally wrong’, school leader

We shouldn’t undermine exams by dismissing them as too easy

It is “morally wrong” to undermine teenagers’ GCSE efforts with talk that the exams are too easy, a school leader said today.

Pupils are working extremely hard, and should not be told that their achievements are not enough, according to Brian Lightman, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL).

With less than a week to go before youngsters receive their GCSE results, now is the time to celebrate their success, he said.

  4. ‘Deeply elitist UK locks out diversity at top’

The UK is “deeply elitist” according to an analysis of the backgrounds of more than 4,000 business, political, media and public sector leaders.

Small elites, educated at independent schools and Oxbridge, still dominate top roles, suggests the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission study.

It says key institutions do not represent the public they serve.

The Headmasters and Headmistresses Conference of top private heads called the study “unreasonable and unfair”.

HMC chairman Richard Harman, headmaster of Uppingham School, said that to suggest that a high number of people in positions of influence were there simply because they went to private schools was “lazy stereotyping and underestimates the diversity within the sector”.

Tony Fusco and Brandon Miller spent two seasons together on the Shenendehowa football team.

In those two years the former Plainsmen became good friends, but like almost every other high school athlete, Fusco and Miller’s playing careers as teammates had an expiration date and eventually that day would come.

It is hard to oversell how good Tony Fusco’s senior season on the mat really was. He was undefeated through the year, including sweeps at the Shenendehowa Invitational and Eastern States Classic, before he overcame a knee injury to win the state tournament. Fusco will attend UAlbany in the fall and play football, so his 11-3 win in the 195-pound state final probably is the final wrestling match of his career.

“I love how close it was and I love the coaching staff there,” Fusco said. “They really seemed to take a liking to me and the players there are really great. I feel that something special could happen there and it was a great fit for me.”

His decision came down to both near and far, playing football for the University of Maine or at the University at Albany.

Largest gift ever to hospital supports expansion project

    Chris ManningThursday, Jun 12, 2014

When it comes to children and youth, retired Wilmington real estate developer Anthony N. Fusco, Sr. is making dreams come true. He has pledged $5 million to the expansion of Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, specifically, the colorful, soaring atrium entrance lobby that will serve as its new welcoming portal. Mr. Fusco’s is the largest gift received by Nemours to date.

As duPont Hospital for Children began planning its facility expansion, some of the most critical advice about what should be included came from the children themselves and their families. The result, to be unveiled in September 2014, is a five-story addition to the existing hospital that will support high tech, family-friendly care in a beautiful and comfortable environment.

  10. 14 failing elementary schools to change in 2015-16 year
By Karen Yi Contact Reporter Elementary Schools Walker Elementary School

Fourteen failing elementary schools in Broward County will undergo dramatic changes next school year as part of a state-mandated effort to fix low-performing campuses.

Schools that receive an “F” grade or three consecutive “D” grades must either close, convert into a charter school or significantly change in some way. School grades are based solely on student test scores at the elementary and middle school level. High school grades incorporate other factors such as graduation rates.

The truth is, I do know important people, but that didn’t help me one bit.

Today is World Day Against Child Labour, an initiative of the International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC) in the International Labour Organization (ILO). This year’s focus is on the importance of quality education as a key step in tackling child labour around the world. According to the IPEC, “It is very timely to do so, as in 2015 the international community will be reviewing reasons for the failure to reach development targets on education and will be setting new goals and strategies.”
